Today’s game saw the return trip to EMTEC whom we beat 4-0 in the first fixture of 2009, reverting to a 4-4-2 formation from last week’s 3-5-2 we were looking for 3 valuable points to stave off the relegation fears.
Trying to improve on last week’s disappointing 4-4 draw, Derby kicked off on what was a narrow pitch so there wasn’t going to be much width so trying to play our usual game would be difficult. Starting with a keeper who last played in goal 4 years ago looked nervous in the first ten minutes, kicking and punching the ball as if it were a hot potato.
After much end to end play derby put a few good passes together on both flanks through Davis, Hanstock, Perry and Gale with the ball making it into EMTECs area but the efforts in front of goal were not put away. Our opposition were not without their own chances as they too pushed forward, it wasn’t until midway through the half before our hosts opened the scoring and within a minute derby were 2-0 down after a through ball made it passed the back four and was lifted over the advancing Clay.
Getting to half time looking shaken changes were made as McCrystal came on at left back with Perry coming off and the team was shuffled. Looking more solid Derby started to probe the EMTEC defence for an opening to get us back in the game. The deep goal kicking saw our opposition look increasingly uncomfortable with R. Selby making some good runs into the area. With the ball being used well on both wings and being put into the box a through ball found Gale who stuck the ball home 2-1. With players going forward in search of an equaliser we became stretched at times.
EMTEC were flooding the midfield and with Derby stretched were finding joy with balls through and behind the back four, and on the occasions the ball wasn’t over ran they had shots off target. With 15 minutes remaining and with no equaliser forthcoming a ball looped over razor and the forward raced through and put the ball into the bottom corner past the outstretched Clay 3-1. With late changes with Macmillan and Crosby coming on we failed to make any more headway against our well organised opposition.
