Today’s cup match was a quarter final and for the first 45 minutes we looked like a side that wanted the win for a semi final place. Just 3 changes from last week’s win saw D. Hanstock in goal and L. Pateman and A. Gibbs return to the side, we started 4-4-2 and from the kick off we pressed forward using the ball well across the middle and just lacking a final ball.

The passing and pressure were beginning to tell with chances being created mostly from corners with Davis getting some good efforts in but failing to trouble the Calverton goal keeper, good through balls from midfield fond the forwards but again the finish was lacking. M. Hart had the best effort of the half for derby with a strong volley that the keeper had to save.

Just before half time a strong challenge on the edge of the area by Moss-Pierce brought about a free kick and a yellow card, this unsettled the team and the half ended with Calverton having most of the ball and creating a few chances. Starting the 2nd half it seemed as if Derby minds were elsewhere, Calverton used their subs well and started to put pressure on our back four and the chances began to trouble derby’s keeper.

Midway through the second half Calverton scored with shot that took a cruel deflection of White, the introduction of subs Macmillian, Crosby and Fisher seemed to wake derby up as we pushed forward again but still with no end product being seen. This late pressure saw Derby’s captain Jebbett shoot from distance to force the oppositions keeper to turn the ball over his bar for a corner, from this corner Selby went close with a header.

Had we taken our chances and made the pressure tell in the first half the outcome would have been different, but let’s see the same effort and attitude for next week’s fixture.
