The game kicked off and Derby tried to settle into a rhythm and play football but the early exchanges were going back and forth, but it was the Ams who provided the first of what would be more than a few chances, good play in the middle saw Morris and Savage distribute the ball wide to White and Perry on the wings and proceeded to get forward and try to find Mayrick in the Emtec penalty area. Mayrick soon got his reward for his work alone up front when 15 minutes in he bagged the first of what was to be a hat trick.
The play although at times scrappy did see Derby double their lead when a free kick of about 30 yards and taken by Morris then saw the ball move in the air and finish in the back of the net. The confidence was up and the complacency of taking the lead not evident as the Ams went in search of more goals and a run down the left by full back Clay saw him as the furthest man forward and Mayricks throw of his shoulder allowed him to shoot from just inside the area and force the keeper into a great save to deny another goal.
Derby’s third of the half came with a good move down the right started by Derbyshire and found Perry who moved the ball inside and get on the end of the resulting pass in the area only to be taken out by the keeper, penalty went the cry but the referee played good advantage as Mayrick stroked the ball home for 3-0. The half coming to a close saw Emtec by now moving the ball about more and forcing the Ams on to the back foot, amongst this the long throw ins were dealt with comfortably but a ball diagonally over the top found the forward racing into the area and beat the advancing keeper Smith with a very cool finish to bring the half to a close at 3-1.
The half time team talk was positive and all about discipline and to keep the shape and to not concede any soft goals, the half kicked off and early on our opponents showed their intent by moving the ball down both wings and trying to force an opening, Derbys defence were equal to it as time and again as centre half’s Hosker and Selby dealt with the threat comfortably. Almost against the run of play the ball broke for Clay who fed it down the line for Mayrick to run onto and his cross found Perry who placed his finish to perfection in the back of the net 4-1.
The half progressed and substitutions were made as Clay and Morris were replaced by Crosby and Jebbett, they play still shifted end to end and with Emtec looking like not getting anything more from the game as Hanstock won the ball in the middle with good work rate and getting his slide tackling spot on to deny the opposition any rest bite. Mayrick grabbed his hat trick in the closing stages of the half when he broke through a tired defence and struck his shot with venom into the back of the net 5-1. Last of the substitutions saw Perry replace by Bravo and still the threat wasn’t over from Mayrick as he again broke free of Emtec’s shackles and powered into the area only to hit a thunderous shot against the bar.
