On the back of last week’s win against Bassingfield things were looking up for the Ams, travelling to 2nd in the table Beeston who were looking to push top of the league. With a few changes due to injuries or players missing Derby hoped to pick up three points to further propel them away from the foot of the table.
The game opened up and flowed end to end as both teams sized each other up, Beeston did the early pressing with Derby counter attacking on occasion, both defences seemed to cope with the opening 15 minutes as no breakthrough came for either team. Had it not been for an off side flag them Perry might very well have opened the scoring, with a great ball over the defence and a volley to finish.
The Ams were using both flanks as White and Macmillan looked to get the ball into strikers Perry and Meyrick more joy was had down the left than the right, the defence was pushed as full backs Derbyshire and Clay were busy fending off attacks down their respective flanks while centre backs Hosker and R. Smith marshalled their strikers to limited shots at goal. The game started getting physical as tackles started to go in and Beeston seemed upset not to be in a commanding position and they even resorted to diving in the box to gain their advantage, late in the half after some arguing on the edge of the Derby area as keeper smith was out of his net a quick free kick was taken and thankfully not on target.
The second half started more quickly for our hosts as they almost scored with a flowing move through the middle but the effort went wide. The game was evenly poised and White and Meyrick had joy down the left and put balls into the box but the end product was missing, Beeston to had they share of penetration into the box and efforts at goal. Substitutions saw Macmillan, Perry and Selby make way for Kearton, Bravo and Jebbett, late in the half saw Beeston race clear of the Ams defence and a square ball saw the shot hit the advancing K. Smith only to see the saved shot fall kindly to the striker who placed his shot passed the defender on the line 1-0.
Despite Derbys best efforts to find an equaliser none was forth coming and keeper smith pulled of some good saves to keep the score at one-nil and just before the end K. Smith cracked his head on the post while saving a shot. All in all a point would have been fair still things to be worked on boys as the talking was lacking.
